Two sparrows
on the center line
one insistent,
one in crisis.
I turn around
to offer assistance
knowing it is already too late.
This world is cruel and merciless.
One has left, one remains
staring at the sky;
I lift her with words
used for loved ones,
feel her spirit leave
as I lie her in the grass.
A million heartbreaks
in her final wingbeats,
a million tears
I don’t dare shed.
This world is cruel and merciless.
