This here, when I see you,
it’s not longing or love
it’s just the remnants of waiting
waiting for someone to return
the shadow puppets dance
as headlights come home
or the flutter of eyes
after a long night of sleep
there you are, I’ve missed you
memory keen and vivid
how you used to be
photos flip past, the reeling
that feeling so sharp
I can sometimes still feel the cut
smell the mettle’s wound
I WAITED FOR YOU TO COME BACK
